During the Industrial Revolution, chicken wire glass gained popularity for its durability and fire resistance. The makeup consisted of embedding mesh wire in plate glass. Today, this vintage glass is a popular decorative choice among designers. There are many ways to fabricate and utilize Chicken Wire Glass in homes, historic buildings, and restaurants.
Lamination is one way to fabricate this vintage glass. Many glass fabricators are equipped to laminate mesh wire to clear float glass or different kinds of pattern glass. Some patterned glass options that accentuate the mesh wire include floralite, flemish, reed, and winterlake glass. The combination of the mesh wire and the pattern glass gives the unit an antique, old-world feel. Glass laminating involves two layers of glass with liquid resin and the desired interlayers. The final product will be a thick safety glass that is perfect for skylights or window panels. When a product is laminated, the glass will stay in place instead of shattering when compromised.
Digital glass printing is a new way to fabricate wire glass. With digital printing, glass fabricators can replicate the exact look of the wire detail and print it directly onto the glass. You can print on any vintage pattern glass to achieve an antique look. Additionally, printing starts with a minimum thickness of 4mm (5/32″) which is perfect for cabinets or applications that require a lighter glass.
